I have been studying Classics in one form or another since I was 16, and my love for these courses remains over a decade later! I have received a 1st class honours degree in Classical Studies and have also achieved a Merit in my Master's degree in Classics and Ancient History at Birmingham University. I have recently completed my PGCE in Classics and have QTS status. Alongside my knowledge of Classics, I also have a strong interest in Mesopotamian and Egyptian history and have taken courses in Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Sumerian. I have a great deal of passion for working with children and adults alike, to kindle the same enthusiasm for the ancient world that I possess, and to educate people in these brilliant subjects. I currently have weekend and evening availability, with a few morning and afternoon weekday slots.
As well as tutoring privately I am a trained Classics teacher, having received QTS status in 2018. I have worked extensively with secondary school students across key stages 3-5, in state and private schools, and I have taught Latin across all of these stages, and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A-Level. I have worked as a teaching assistant, so I am confident working with SEND students. I also have experience teaching key stage 2 at a prep school.
I believe that in order to learn a language, reinforcement of grammar and vocabulary is vital, so I will pepper my teaching with frequent tests and translation homework - I feel this is crucial for increasing a student's confidence in their abilities, as it allows them to see their improvement on a regular basis. Whilst teaching Latin, I will point out linguistic roots to English words and contextualise the text we are translating, to broaden the student's understanding and to foster interest in the text itself.
Whilst teaching Classical Civilisation, similar approaches apply! Whether we're studying a tragedy, comedy or the Parthenon, cultural and social context are vital to an understanding of the subject.
Most importantly, I believe that a student should be able to really enjoy what they are learning and to have a positive experience that leaves them happy with what they are getting from the lesson. The student is the most important person in the room, and I am more than willing to adapt my teaching style to better suit them.
