I am passionate about teaching, and find equal enjoyment in the challenges and rewards that both SEN and mainstream teaching bring. I have a wide range of tutoring experience, from early years to ks3. I am also a parent.

Tutoring Experience

Through my experience of whole class teaching, combined with my tuition experience, I have experience working with children from every primary year group. I feel that this has helped me develop an understanding of the skills children need to develop across the primary years, and the order of progression through these skills.

I have experience supporting children with EAL, and SEN (Autism, ADHD, Global Delay), and have tutored both children who need extra support to meet age related expectations, and children who need an extra challenge as they are already excelling within their school setting.

On a number of occasions I have stayed with tutoring clients who began lessons when primary aged, as they entered and progressed through ks3. Through this I have maintained a solid understanding of the ks3 Maths and English curriculums, so I will now take on ks3 pupils in these subjects.

I have also tutored children preparing to take entrance exams (11+).

Tutoring Approach

I think as a personal tutor, you are given a unique opportunity to tailor learning to an individual child, as in a mainstream setting this is not always possible (as much as teachers would love to be able to do this for every child!). I think it is incredibly important to get to know a new tutee well, learning about their strengths and weaknesses. I tend to do this both through discussion with the child and their parents, and initial assessments of the child's skills. I then create session plans (in line with the Welsh national curriculum) to target the child's areas for development over a series of connected lessons, to help show clear progress in the child's learning.

I also think it's important to form a relationship with the tutee, and for them to see the sessions as something enjoyable and not just extra work they are forced to do! Wherever possible, I try to bring children's interests into the sessions, whether through contextualised maths learning, or the sorts of reading books chosen.
