I have recently moved back to Gloucester where I spent a considerable time teaching and tutoring in Chemistry and Physics - based courses. , I keep myself busy enjoying the countryside, playing music and supporting my wife in her job with animals.
I was brought up in the SE England with sufficient qualifications to study Chemistry at Imperial College London. I stayed in London to complete a PhD on the biochemistry of bananas of all things! I spent a short time working in the pharmaceutical research before qualifying as a teacher. My career since then has been spent teaching a large variety of chemistry and physics courses in Plymouth and Gloucester. I have held the posts of Science Manager, Head of Physics, and an important role in the training of Health Physics personnel for the nuclear submarines in Plymouth.
I have been teaching Physics and Chemistry since I became a qualified teacher. I have mainly taught in Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges. I have taken on management roles in Colleges, and also moderator and examining ones for various national examination boards. I am used to teaching tutees of 14 years to mature adults across academic levels from gcse to university. I have an active interest in a wide range of science areas from medical science to developments in cosmology. I also enjoy playing and listening to music, and all aspects of the natural world.
My personal tutoring, in recent years, has been concerned with developing examination technique for those aiming for high grades, and also improving the clarity of understanding of key concepts in science. Sessions have been 1 to 1 (mainly at the learner's home). I would normally have prepared material based on the learner's progress for the session, but commonly they have questions on school work which needs to be further discussed and this is supported with oral and written questions.
Covid 19 changed the home visit sessions, and much of last academic year tuition was carried out using 'FaceTime' and 'Zoom'. These sessions were prepared more carefully involving a more organised agenda set up by email prior to the sessions.
