Online Psychology and Special Needs Lessons

Entering high-education at any level can feel starting a game that you don't know the rules of. You might be returning to university after a number of years, or an international student coming to the UK from a different education culture in your home country - either way stress exists purely from not being 100% sure about what is expected of you and the work that you produce. Similarly, you might be struggling on your course and need some additional support and guidance for a range of reasons. I have experience in providing educational support a wide range of students to help facilitate their success.

I love to support students from a range of ages, backgrounds and levels achieve their goals - and recently my practice is returning to this arena after a few years in programme leadership and development, and as an external examiner of post graduate psychology programmes.

Professionally I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and chartered psychologist (CPsychol) with the British Psychological Society. My doctorate in Education Psychology investigated the application of "Growth Mindset" in educational spaces, and this has lead me on to developing interest in the real-world application of psychological theory, research and ideas to support academic performance. And traditionally I have taught on psychology across the life course, child development research, education studies, research methods, child and family intervention, and supervising research projects.

I have extensive experience working with students that are impacted by a range of difficulties and conditions including ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression or in difficult contexts, such as juggling family and work commitments to being a care leaver. I currently see a case load of students that receive external funding for my services. It's important to note that while my area of specialism in within psychology, education, sociology, research methods/evaluation, mental health in children and young people, I tutor students from all disciplines at all levels - from undergrad through to doctoral levels.

My experience in developing, validating, and examining university programmes enables me to explain to you what the course tutors are expecting and where to identify relevant information so you can be sure you're research and self-study towards your assignments make the most of your valuable time.

Tutoring Experience

I have developed and lead post graduate programmes ( MA Mental Health in Children and Young People at Leeds Trinity University) and currently act as an external examiner for three post graduate programmes on psychology, clinical psychology and neuropsychology (University of Plymouth).

In student support capacities I have experience working as a specialist mentor for students experiencing a wide range of mental health issues that impact on their lives. I have extensive experience of working with students who are international or UK based, and returning to education.

Tutoring Approach

I am both person-centred and outcome focused. I am very flexible with the way I work, and find that developing a working mentoring relationship is really important for your success. My approach varies depending on the mentoring context and issues which are present, and the learning that needs to be carried out. As an educator/educationalist I'm informed by psycho-social and socio-cultural thinking primarily.
