I am very passionate about learning, and the process of learning. I most recently taught maths and science in a private international school in Spain, and currently work as head of Physics in the local area. I personally was home-schooled up to A level and subsequently went on to study at two universities. I have worked with young people for around 12 years now, both in a pastoral and educational sense. This experience has made me acutely aware of the different ways people learn, and how their environments affect this process, and therefore the need for the teacher or tutor to be aware of this. I personally find it an achievement to see a student making progress with their learning or watching as the light bulb goes on with new understanding.

Tutoring Experience

I began working with young people in the capacity of a youth worker. I progressed from this to study a teaching degree at the University of Huddersfield and after this training I went on to teach wind turbine engineering to Siemens engineers on behalf of a local education provider amongst other teaching settings. I have experienced a range of curriculums and the demands they place on students. I have been made aware of the different pressure students experience from varying educational environments, and how to help students understand their position and prospects more fully, as well as understanding the requirements being made of them personally. I have experience working with the OCR, AQA, Edexcel and WJEC GCSE and A level examination systems, and personally studied on a system much like the baccalaureate system.

Tutoring Approach

Throughout my time working with children I have been aware of the need for students to have a confidence with what they are studying, I believe that for a student to fully master the subject they are learning, it is very helpful for them to acquire this confidence. I have endeavoured to inspire this confidence in students as a prerequisite to approaching learning. This process is important, from this position the student can approach learning with the view to actively attempt to master a section of learning, rather than seeing it as an insurmountable task. Ofsted has always maintained that students should “own their learning”. I believe this is best achieved by tutors or teachers who are able to give their focus to a smaller group of students, and respond to those students individual needs.
