Now retired from full-time teaching, I still enjoy tutoring students in Biology and I am an examiner for two exam boards, at GCSE and A level (both UK and International).
I have a degree in Human Biology and previously attended medical school before deciding that this was not for me. I took my PGCE at London University Institute of Education, and once I started teaching, I knew that this was the right choice.
I have over 30 years teaching experience, at all levels. My specialist subject is Biology, which I have taught extensively up to A level and in undergraduate courses, and I have experience of teaching for all the main exam boards. I also worked in Special Needs schools and have taught a variety of subjects in addition to Biology. I have been employed as a Home Tutor for my local education authority, delivering school subjects as required, as well as working as a private tutor for several years. In addition, I have been a Teaching and Learning Coach for other teachers across all subject areas in a large tertiary college, a consultant for the Open University, and a student mentor.
I hope to create a calm, friendly atmosphere in which students are not afraid to ask questions and try out ideas in order to fully understand the subject matter and acquire good exam technique. Building confidence is key. I adapt my teaching to suit the learner's individual needs and learning style, using a range of resources. The student can determine the content of each session, or I can suggest areas to work on, as appropriate. I aim to make learning enjoyable whilst achieving the desired outcome in exams. Results have been excellent, with students achieving above their predicted grades and many going on to top universities or medical schools.
