Sam

Hello, my name is Sam and I was born and raised in London. I read History and Archaeology at the University of Southampton, with an additional certificate in French. I specialise in History & Media Studies at 11+, GCSE and A-level, tailoring my approach to specifically help each and every student.
I want my pupils to achieve their full potential in the exam room and beyond.

Note: As of February 2022 I do online-only appointments.

Tutoring Experience

I have been a tutor for 4 years, working with students privately and in schools. My journey as a tutor very much began in Cusco, Peru, where I taught in the ELIM orphanage for two months. The skills I learned there were related primarily to communicating when there is a language difference, which through conscientious listening and trust-building, I found to be almost a greater skill than merely learning the language. This experience has been invaluable and has been carried through into my approach to academic tuition.

Alongside tutoring History and Media Studies over the past 4 years, I have also taught at the Young Film Academy, helping students with writing, storytelling, camera-technique, acting and editing. Having the ability to communicate with young people in a clear and empathic manner, enabled some fantastic films to be made during these sessions. I have loved encouraging my students to follow their passion.

Tutoring Approach

I believe strongly that a great teacher can inspire life long learning and curiosity, and it is with this belief that I imbue my classes. I find out from students how best they learn, and then build from there, working in fun techniques alongside the traditional, whether teaching the theories on the movement of tectonic plates or the factors that lead to King Harold's loss in 1066. The core of the approach is to enable the student to look forward to the process, and inspire them to continue with this spirit in other disciplines of life.

As to sessions, I always offer an initial free 30 minutes consultation which is indicated by First tutors as 50% off the first lesson. As I am relatively new to first tutors, I have also included testimonials from previous students below:

“Whilst I was struggling with approaching different aspects of my essay writing, Sam was extremely helpful in specifically getting me to a point where my essays flowed and were detailed enough to achieve the higher grades in my GCSE.” - Helen, Geography student.

“Sam was a brilliant tutor whilst I was at Young Film Academy summer camp. He really improved the way I approached problems, acting both as a mentor and tutor to make sure I succeeded.” - Sophia, Film Student.

“Sam was a real help to my daughter Sara who became more confident on her film studies course. She improved her ability to speak in class, her writing when conveying her ideas, and became even more passionate about pursuing a career in film”. - Rahel, parent.
