I'm Sam, a Doctor in Computational Chemistry with a broad background in Maths and the Sciences. I have a Master's degree in a mix of Chemistry, Maths and Biology and studied all three physical sciences and Maths at both GCSE and A-Level, achieving high grades in them all. I want to share my enthusiasm in science with students of all abilities.
I currently have around 30 hours of experience in one-to-one tutoring and am actively training with a tutoring charity to gain more experience. My interdisciplinary degrees also gave me experience in explaining complex scientific topics to a wide range of audiences.
When tutoring I like taking a conversational approach involving asking questions to help lead the student to the answer themselves, building confidence in the process. With new topics I will always try to link ideas to a student's existing knowledge and find examples from the real world to help them remember key concepts. Exam preparation is a key skill for GCSE and A-Level students and working on this should start as early as possible. I will start with working through example questions when learning about a topic, leading to working through an exam paper together and finally marking and discussing exam papers completed independently by the student. This will teach general exam technique while establishing topics they are struggling with so we can revisit them and reinforce that understanding. I prefer to teach in person as students are more engaged and more likely to remember an explanation if they were a more active participant in the conversation.
