My name is Sara Flynn, I’ve been a teacher for 30 years and tutoring for about 6. I was an assistant head for 7 years before becoming a lecturer at Brunel University teaching on the PGCE course. I still love my subject and very much enjoy tutoring now . One to one teaching is very rewarding and I can fit in my other interests such writing and spending quality time with friends and family. I’ve three sons who have all been through the education system so I know what’s it like from another perspective too. I believe in helping each child achieve their individual best, that might be an A* or C. I will strive to make the lessons enjoyable and accessible. For those who are aiming for the highest grades I will endeavour to challenge and develop their skills in order for them to achieve optimal success.
As you can see from above, I have a great deal of experience, teaching both English and English literature to A level. I have trained English teachers and I am an AQA examiner so am up to date with exam protocols and expectations. My depth of knowledge in respect of both the subject and teaching experience marry very well to get the best out of my students. I’m a great believer in building confidence. If confidence is lacking, progress and development (and enjoyment) are diminished so that’s one of my priories too. To date, I have many students surpass their target grades, achieving better grades than were expected to achieve. This is the joy of tutoring as the one to one time allows me to work on individual, specific requirements which can make all the difference. It’s also about listening and finding out what the student wants out of the lesson. When a student feels included they see the value of the lesson much more acutely.
Creating a welcoming environment in which students feel at ease to contribute freely to every lesson. It is not just about me giving notes and lecturing them, it’s a reciprocal relationships where I expect students to work with me. I will guide them, I will teach them but I will also discuss themes and texts with them for a deeper level of understanding. I have been very successful with a great many students who have been very complimentary about my style of teaching which encourages their involvement.
