I am an enthusiastic and experienced teacher with a passion for all things science! Having been a teacher for over 10 years, I genuinely love helping young people to understand the world around us through the science curriculum, and using real life examples to help them relate to their learning. I believe in tailoring my lessons to individuals, and I work closely with students and their parents/carers to understand your particular needs and make sure students get the most out of our time together.
Outside of work, I love spending time outdoors. I'm happiest hilking up a mountain or on a kayak or paddle board. I'm a keen (but very amature) climber, and recently got back on roller skates after a short 20 year break!
I have taught biology, chemistry and physics in secondary schools across West Yorkshire for over 10 years. During this time I was also a head of department and assistant headteacher, so I have wide knowledge and experience of the curriculum, assessment, and effective teaching approaches.
I left the classroom 2 years ago, and now use my knowledge and experience to train new science teachers, work as an examiner for the AQA examination board, and tutor students. Whilst being out of school gives me the flexibility I need in my life, I miss teaching terribly. This is the main reason I continue to work as a tutor.
Being an AQA examiner for the last 3 years has given me an in depth understanding of what is required to be successful in the GCSE Science exams. I've been able to use this in my tutoring lessons to support students to make excellent progress and be successful in their exams at the end of year 11.
Positivity and tailored support. I don't believe in a 'one size fits all' approach and I adapt my teaching to the needs of individual students. I understand the pressure that exams can put on learners and therefore try to make my lessons as enjoyable as possible, which is particularly important when students are doing ‘extra’ outside of school! As a tutor, my role is not just to teach the curriculum, but to help students build confidence in themselves and their abilities.
