I've been in secondary education for 30 years and have experience in teaching and tutoring Maths, Computer Science/Programming and Geography. Loving those moments when a sudden realisation or understanding appears on a student's face because we have gone step by step through a process rather than trying to memorise an answer.
With 30 years experience teaching in Secondary schools as Head of Computer Science and teaching from ages 6 to adult at our STEM club. It is fair to say that I have encountered a wide range of abilities, attitudes and approaches to learning. This also includes adult training skills developed when supporting colleagues with the transition to online tutoring during the pandemic years.
I have experience of marking at GCSE level and coursework moderation.
A wide variety of approaches are required to keep the tutoring effective and engaging. The first step is aiding with the realisation that everyone learns at different paces and in different ways. Some students like a project based approach, whilst other students prefer to target a particular element of the syllabus that they are struggling with. The next step is reassurance that it is ok to make mistakes in their learning, to aid with resilience. An iterative approach ensures that previous learning is embedded into future sessions.
