Semi-retired Maths teacher and ex Head of Department looking for a few students, preferably for Edexcel A level maths and further maths tuition, but also GCSE Higher or Foundation. For a mathematician I am surprisingly creative, having danced for 17 years as a child and recently learned how to crochet. You are very likely to meet my cats, Ethel and Mabel, if I tutor you online and possibly even if you come to my house.
I've taught for 30 years, the first 19 in a large state school north of Northampton and more recently in an independent school near Buckingham for 11 years. Most of my timetable has been KS5 in recent years with enough KS4 to fill up the gaps. While I can teach younger students I prefer the older ones, as they usually get my sense of humour!
I like to spend the first session asking lots of questions, which may seem like silly questions, but that is so that I can try and understand how the student's brain processes the mathematics. That way I can tailor my explanations to work with their methods instead of imposing an alternative on them. However, as an experienced A level examiner and team leader for one of the large examining bodies, I tend to also make sure they understand exactly what is required in order to be awarded all of the marks for exam questions. I use a lot of past exam questions to practise the skills covered in tutor sessions and do my best to support work done at school/college.
