I’m now available for tutoring and offer a highly successful online tutoring service which has proved extremely beneficial to my tutees with high grades achieved. Further details below.

I received amazing feedback from one of my Higher English Tutees from the last academic year who achieved a top Band 1 and I tutored her online for the full academic year. This was also during the pandemic with all the disruption. I was very proud of her as were her parents!

I am a highly motivated individual with a love of learning and have many years experience in lecturing and tutoring students of all ages. I am able to inspire others to enjoy learning and to achieve their full potential by using a variety of motivational techniques and self evaluation. I have taught a wide variety of subjects to student groups as well as tutoring on a one to one basis in Higher English, Economics, Accounting, as well as teaching and running courses involving study skills. I have studied psychology in my Masters Degree and apply some of this knowledge to help motivate my learners. I am happy to tutor in the evening and at weekends as I love tutoring. Over the years I have taught students who have achieved great success and then progressed to University and are now teachers themselves.

One of my previous tutees had contacted me for tutoring as she was predicted to achieve a D in the Higher English final exam. However, having worked with her and preparing her for her prelim exam she has achieved a B pass. Another tutee achieved a B pass in Standard Grade but there had been doubt as to whether he would pass at all. I have just received the news that two of my Higher English tutees achieved A passes - one with a Band 1 ( above 85%). All very happy tutees and parents! As well as myself!

Tutoring Experience

25 years lecturing experience in one college plus another 4 years at various establishments teaching subjects from standard grade/int 2 to HND/Higher levels. Experience of teaching under 16's as well as adult learners. Teaching in house at various business premises - team leading, confidence building, counselling skills. Promoted post in college offering guidance/counselling to students as well as interviewing potential students. Course writing and development/internal verification procedures and examination marker. One to one tutoring at various levels from P2 to S6 via First Tutors as well as by referral. I also have a Diploma in Counselling Skills.

I have full GTCS registration and current disclosure documentation.

Tutoring Approach

ONLINE

I offer an excellent online service via an online live platform complimented by email contact. Please contact me for further information on this tuition method and read my tutees comments on how it works in my feedback section. Tutees really enjoy it and it means we are both in our own homes but the tutoring can work in exactly the same way. I have students who are only a mile away and others on the other side of the world!

I have worked with students living in southern Spain, Paris and even Nairobi. Areas of tuition covered English language (GCSE), vocabulary, close reading (RUAE), essay writing and creative writing.
I have also had a tutee living in the North East of Scotland and I have been tutoring in preparation for Higher English.

Online tuition is very successful and my tutees enjoy and benefit from this.

I have been offering online tutoring for a number of years but during the restrictions with COVID-19 I transferred all my tutees to online. Despite some initial doubts and hesitation, my learners really enjoyed our sessions, they were able to learn and improve regardless and this resulted in extremely positive outcomes.

FIRST MEETING

When I first meet my students I usually have an informal chat so that we can discuss strengths and areas for development. I use a combination of student centred approaches as well as learning and study skills, confidence building, examination techniques, self reflection and evaluation of learning, stress management. Each student is supported and helped to reach their full potential. If wished I can make up a learning/study plan and negotiate with the learner to ensure that the workload is balanced with the other subjects being studied at school/college.

SECONDARY STUDENTS

With my tutees at secondary level I am able to support them not only academically but also for confidence building, study techniques and exam preparation. I feel it is beneficial to ensure that tutoring support begins early enough in the school year to allow maximum benefit rather than after the prelim results. In my experience this creates added stress for the learner at this late stage.

EXAM PREPARATION

As well as tutoring academic subjects, I also help the student to focus and prepare for the final exam. Project planning and time management techniques are taught while considering other subjects also being studied. Each tutee is supported depending on their individual needs. Some require help with confidence building and stress related issues. Others are quite confident within themselves but need more help to cope in the exam room on the day. I believe that knowledge and learning must also be complimented by competent examination techniques to ensure the learner achieves their full potential and best grade possible.

At University Level I have tutored a 2nd year undergraduate who required help with critical essays and reports. Essay structures were being reviewed as well as correct referencing methods ie Harvard Referencing System. This support is available regardless of discipline as I can offer a general essay structure to achieve best results.

I also offer help with UCAS applications and in particular - the personal statement. This is a very important element in the University application procedure and can be a key factor in being accepted for your chosen course.
