I am a mature family woman, educated to Ph.D. level. I believe in constantly updating my skills, so have, for example, recently taken another qualification in teaching. I also hold a certificate in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). I am currently based between Whetstone and Arnos Grove in North London.
For the last twenty years I have worked as a freelance creative writing tutor, writer, editor and proof-reader, whilst at the same time doing private one-to-one tuition in Maths and English. Not only am I an award-winning and widely published short story writer, novelist and diarist but I have written for mainstream newspapers and magazines dealing with educational issues, as well as for magazines geared towards young people. I have also had academic papers published both in the UK and abroad. My work is currently used in German and Norwegian schools, amongst others.
I have many years’ teaching experience both in the UK and overseas, up to and including university level, in classrooms and privately. My students have been as young as six or as old as sixty. They have been of varying abilities and from hugely different backgrounds. I have taught individuals in their homes as well as small groups at colleges, in libraries and in community organizations.
Note: I am also prepared to tutor long distance, via Skype. Currently clients who have moved overseas have chosen to re-engage me because their children have settled with me and are progressing well.
I enjoy tutoring and find it a hugely rewarding experience. I think that my enthusiasm as an educator imbues my tutees with an eagerness to make progress in their work. I believe when tutees see, not only the practical point and purpose of getting a good education, but how exciting it is to learn, they learn more easily. Regardless of the tutee’s ability, I take pleasure in helping her/him achieve his/her potential as far as possible. One of my tutees who was barely literate and numerate at 16 went on not only to pass her exams but to become a teacher herself. I have raised, and needless to say tutored, a well-balanced, sociable, talented and academically successful young woman who is now herself a senior maths teacher. I take equal pride in my contribution to the achievements of both these young women.
Because of my wide writing experience I can offer students at universities and colleges guidance in:
-Developing a critical approach to reading / research
-Learning how to analyze materials
-Clarifying ideas
-Understanding how academic papers should be structured
-Writing critically
-Finding strategies to overcome weaknesses early in their studies
I am willing to be a sounding board for students' ideas before they are presented in seminars, papers or tutorials. I am also available to proofread assignments and suggest ways in which they may be edited before submission.
Caveat: I am specifically NOT available to do the actual writing of assignments, coursework or essays.
