I am a highly experienced tutor of engineering at degree level, and maths, further maths and physics at GCSE and A-level; and chemistry at GCSE level.
Please note that currently, I only have availability before 2pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).
I hold a PhD from Imperial College London in engineering, and have 10 years experience working for a reputable engineering consultancy, designing and analysing engineering systems, components and structures. I have considerable and extensive experience tutoring students in various engineering disciplines including mechanical, civil and structural, aerospace. Please see below for the modules I teach.
My academic and professional experience enable me to teach subject material from first principles, giving deep insights of the concepts, and the practical applications of the subject content.
I have extensive experience providing tuition in the following subjects:
(1) Engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Please see below for the subjects I cover.
(2) Physics at GCSE and A-level
I am well-versed with the AS and A2 syllabus on all the major exam boards. In addition I help students with the Physics Admission Test (PAT) to Oxford University, and the Engineering Admissions Assessment to the University of Cambridge (ENGAA).
(3) Maths and Further Maths at GCSE and A-level
I cover the syllabus for all years, teaching from first principles to give the student deep insights and a solid understanding of the concepts.
(3) Chemistry at GCSE level
I tutor single science chemistry on all the major examination boards.
(1) Help in understanding course subjects.
(2) Advice on non-technical skills such as writing reports and dissertations, giving presentations, study skills, project management
(3) Advice on how to carry out research, eg: performing a literature review, selecting a topic for research, planning and conducting experimental work, writing up research
(4) Proof-reading dissertations
(5) Mentoring and career advice
(6) General engineering advice
Mechanical Engineering:
Civil Engineering:
(1) Face-to-face tuition locally
(2) Online tuition
For online tuition, I use a web-based whiteboard called BitPaper. This allows both tutor and student to talk and write simultaneously on the same board, and while seeing and talking through the Skype web-conferencing application. This is highly regarded by students who notice no difference between online and face to face. BitPaper allows PDF/Microsoft documents and images to be inserted and annotated.
I have been tutoring since 2010.
(1) Engineering students:
Dr Simon is a dedicated and honest tutor who prepares for the sessions to ensure they are productive. He has an excellent understanding of the topics from first principles and is able to teach them in a manner that is easy for the student. I am grateful for his support! (Mohamad)
A very clear and effective tutor, he has given me good support in revising Mechanics of Materials for my final year BEng retake. He does not extend the time unnecessarily and is reliable and prompt. He is someone who can explain the topics and show you how to deal with questions, he has also set me some questions to do at home. I would not hesitate to recommend him for face to face tutoring in engineering at undergraduate level. (Ann)
I am very grateful for the support that I’m receiving from Simon, he has a very clear cut way of explaining complex topics such as Strength of Components for my MSc course. He has considerable knowledge around Fracture Mechanics, Fatigue and Yielding and always prepares for every session to ensure you get maximum benefit of his time. He is excellent in his assessment of your present knowledge and your rate of progression to enable maximum understanding of the subject. (Luke)
Simon has tutored my son on line, in various undergraduate civil engineering modules, for the past three years. He has been most accommodating in terms of scheduling suitable tutoring times and in understanding the particular requirements needed to be covered during the sessions. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to others requiring similar tuition. (Charles)
Dr. Simon has helped me greatly throughout my first and second year of Engineering at University. The lessons were held online which was really useful because no travelling was involved. Dr Simon always starts from first principles when explaining the solution to a problem which has really helped me to understand the fundamental concepts rather than memorise answers to questions. Furthermore he provides many real life examples which demonstrate how the topics we study are applied in the real world. I would highly recommend Dr Simon to anyone looking for an engineering tutor! (Sneha)
Dr Simon is an excellent tutor, affable and easy to get on with. His command of the subjects covered is comprehensive and he is more than capable of explaining from first principles. He was instrumental in passing my 2nd year Mechanical Engineering Modelling and Analysis exams, aiding me with advanced mathematics especially Vector calculus. (George)
Prepared for my year one Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics exams under Dr Simon and couldn't have asked for better support, after thoroughly going through all of the concepts required, ensuring I thoroughly understood them, we throughly analysed past papers, developing my exam technique very effectively.
10/10 tutor! (Amarjot)
I have been tutored by Simon throughout the three years of my Mechanical engineering degree, in the third year covering finite element analysis, Engineering mathematics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and control systems.. Simon prepares thoroughly for each session by covering the required knowledge and topics beforehand. I would highly recommend Simon for mechanical engineering tuition. (Balraj)
Simon has been an extremely helpful tutor. I am currently an architecture student who struggles immensely with various Civil Engineering modules within my degree. With Simons guidance, he has helped to teach me alternative ways to solve complex questions and has walked me through most of my syllabus. (Gabrielle)
In my third year of civil engineering degree, Simon taught me structural mechanics and foundation engineering. He explains the subject really well and made sure that I understand the concepts and made it very easy for me to solve many questions that I had found very hard and complicated . He also has a good plan of what we will be studying in the lesson so no time will be wasted . I felt very confident with the knowledge I got even though he taught me over a very short period of time. I got a 1:1 in both modules. I would totally recommend Simon. (Fatma)
(2) Physics students:
Simon is an excellent tutor. He explains concepts very clearly, and his teaching is methodical and thorough. During the lesson he writes summaries of what he teaches, which I found very helpful in my revision. In addition to tutoring me in A-level physics he also helped me with parts of my A-level statistics and further maths FP3 module that I was struggling with. Although he started tutoring me only 3 weeks before the exam, the quality of his tuition allowed me to prepare myself in the best possible way. (Keenan)
Simon has been tutoring my daughter for A level Physics for the last 3 months and he has been a great help to her already. Simon is very methodical, detailed and covers all areas of a certain topic very comprehensively. It is clear that he has been tutoring these topics for a long time and knows exactly where students need extra support. My daughter is extremely comfortable with his patient and structured approach. Upon request from my daughter, he even went beyond his usual Physics lessons and helped her clarifying doubts for her interview in Cambridge. I would definitely recommend him as one of the most reliable tutors in Maths, Physics etc. (Sarmistha)
Simon has tutored my son for A-level Physics which has immensely made a difference to his understanding and confidence in the subject.
My son highly rates Simon in his ability to teach complex topics in an easy to understand manner. Simon is very pleasant, flexible and easy to get on with.
I would highly recommend Simon as a tutor. (Yousef)
(3) Maths students:
When Simon started tutoring our son the second year of his A-level maths, he found out the areas he was struggling in, and planned a strategy of how to get him back on track. Each lesson was very well planned and each topic was explained perfectly. Overall, a great teacher who has pushed him to improve more that he thought he could. Highly recommend. (Vaida)
Simon has tutored my son for A level maths since September 2016. Simon is an excellent tutor - he is focussed and thorough. Simon's calm manner and clear communication skills have undoubtedly helped my son with his studies. (Lorna)
Simon tutored me for my maths A Level retake this past academic year. He has proven to be a fantastic tutor bringing my grade up from a B in my Core 4 A Level module to an A*. I have found Simon has a great depth of understanding of the concepts and teaches them very thoroughly and in a way that is easy to understand. I could not recommend Simon more highly. (Mahrus)
I ensure that the student has a firm grasp of the concepts taught, and is able apply the concepts confidently in answering exam questions.
