Hi, I'm Sophia and I have been a Maths tutor since 2017. I love to help my students understand the variety of topics they are taught at school, and also to enjoy them and have fun! I'm currently studying for my Masters degree in Materials Science after having completed my Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering.
To aid in students understanding, I like to break down the mathematics curriculum into bitesize chunks and deliver a complete perspective on the breadth and depth of maths, delving beyond the scope of classroom learning. I am able to offer useful strategies to students who may struggle with concentration or memorisation.
I believe that the biggest key to improving mathematical skills is self-confidence, and I aim to create an encouraging and motivating environment where my students are able to reach their full potential.
I have been tutoring mathematics up to and including GCSE level for the last 6 years. Most of my students have been privately tutored but I have also been employed by multiple tutoring agencies. All my students have increased their grades, but more importantly have become more confident in using maths day-to-day. My lessons will be tailored to suit the students specific exam board in the case of GCSEs.
In our first session we will discuss the reasons you are looking for Maths tuition, and which areas you would like to improve. From then, I will customise the lessons to suit the student and work to improve confidence across the scope of the curriculum, and tailor the level of work to the students needs.
I like to teach mathematical concepts in conjunction with exam style questions, and all lesson resources will be made available to the student for their own revision. Using a combination of learning styles helps both me and the student to engage with the content: first an explanation with visual aids, then an interactive discussion of the concept and an opportunity to explore it, followed by its application to exam-style questions. The aim of this is to develop a thinking-style which can later be used in exam situations.
