Sophie

Hello, my name is Sophie. I am a very enthusiastic and passionate science teacher with a degree from the University of Plymouth. I am a bright, vibrant and energetic young woman with a passion for dance and yoga. My key strengths lie in my ability to develop strong positive relationships with my pupils - generating their self-motivation to learn and in doing so, rapidly engage in the wonders that science has to offer. I feel extremely lucky to have such a rewarding job and love the fact I can make a difference to children's lives everyday.

Tutoring Experience

I began my teaching career by completing a GTP in secondary science teaching.I am currently in my ninth year of teaching and hold the responsibility Deputy Head of Science, with a KS4 and GCSE focus. I teach all 3 sciences at GCSE. My pupils achieve fantastic results and my lessons are regularly graded as outstanding. I also run drop-in sessions after school for anyone needed extra support, so I have plenty of experience working with students on a 1-to-1 basis. I also mentor trainee teachers and support the overall professional development of my faculty. I have privately tutored seven students over the past four years and all have been very successful.

Tutoring Approach

Throughout my GCSEs and A-levels, I lacked confidence and did not believe I was intelligent enough to achieve good grades. For this reason, my Mother thought I would benefit from a tutor. I honestly cannot explain how much my tutor helped me in terms of improving my exam technique, helping me understand complicated scientific concepts and ultimately making me believe in myself. I am now in the privileged position to be able to do the same for someone else. Initially, I would spend time getting to know you and would seek to identify your strengths and weaknesses. I would then employ a wide range of learning strategies to build your confidence and improve your scientific knowledge and understanding. My sessions are individually tailored and flexible to meet the needs of the student, so are student-focused rather than traditionally teacher-led.
