I have a 2:1 degree in sociology from Lancaster University and a PGCE in Further, Higher and Adult Education, and have been teaching A-level and GCSE sociology since 2002.
I have taught across various syllabi, OCR and AQA, and in a variety of different teaching institutions with an extremely diverse range of students. Students frequently comment positively on my enthusiasm and passion for sociology and my encouraging and supportive nature.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and reading.
My teaching career began in a secondary school in Blackpool. It progressed as subject leader at an outstanding sixth-form college, Esher, and head of the social sciences department at one of the largest FE colleges in England, Richmond-upon-Thames College. I was the subject leader in the sociology department at Sussex Coast College where the examination results were consistently excellent and, on moving back to Kingston, I have taught at Woking College. Over the last ten years I have also been an examiner for AQA A level and have run many revision courses.
My approach to tutoring is to be flexible
to the needs of students.I adapt each session to suit the specific needs of each student. Therefore I vary my teaching strategies and approach to teaching accordingly.
As sociology is an exam based subject I incorporate practice past examination paper questions into the sessions with a focus on helping students to develop the key skills in sociology. These skills include knowledge and understanding, application and evaluation. This is to enable students to see the links between what they are learning and typical examination questions which helps to build confidence.I am happy to tutor online or in person.
