Every student is different, and by tailoring sessions to the specific needs of each student, I work to build the self-confidence of my students to prepare them fully for their exams. With many years of experience of working with A-level students, I know that I make a difference. I travel to your home, and offer the first hour of tuition free of charge to allow you to assess my suitability to your needs, with no obligation.
My experience ranges from teaching 16-year-olds in secondary schools through to young adults in further and higher education and I really enjoy helping students achieve their deserved goals.
It is possible for students to get left behind when being taught Maths in large groups, since it is very difficult for teachers in typical classroom situations to focus their attention on individuals and this has proven to be a problem with many of the students that I have met through my private tuition work. I believe that good communication is the single most important part of a good student/tutor relationship and getting to grips with a specific student’s problems is much easier on a one-to-one basis. I am a good listener and like to encourage students to talk about what they understand and don't understand about a given topic. I am a very patient tutor and good at explaining topics from several directions until the student and I find that common ground where the topic makes sense to the student. Whilst there may be times when it is appropriate to set homework at the end of a tutorial session to properly assess a student's understanding, the session itself is about real teaching and I concentrate my efforts on teaching the student, not simply giving exercises for the student to do, as helpful as that can be in certain situations. Throughout the tutorial session, I constantly check that the student does understand each step before moving on to the next one which, in a subject like Maths, is absolutely essential if the student is to progress and improve his or her chance of doing well in examinations.
I am happy for students either to visit me or for me to visit them in their own home and I am also happy to provide references from former students.
To help the student make up his or her mind about my suitability to his or her needs, I am happy to offer the first hour of tuition free of charge with no obligation on the part of the student.
