I have 18 years experience as a Maths tutor and have helped hundreds of students to achieve their goals and to find their confidence and enjoyment of mathematics.
I have always had a fascination with and enjoyment of Mathematics and I love to pass this on to my students.
I took my degree in Maths at Warwick University and since then I have been working in the field of Maths education for the last 18 years. I started teaching in a private school in the Brighton area where I taught the GCSE course for 2 years. After this I began tutoring and found that it suited my style to work one to one and I have never looked back!
I have taught hundreds of students of all abilities and ages, from 10 years old to adults needing to retake their exams. One of my students was the youngest to achieve an A grade at A level at age 10.
I was part of the original team who set up the company MathsDoctor that pioneered online maths tutoring around 15 years ago, so I am well versed in making online teaching successful and enjoyable.
Outside of teaching I am also a trained Counsellor and work with private clients. Although I don't use this directly in my tutoring work, the skills I have developed are really useful for understanding why some students struggle in maths.
I live in the Sussex countryside with my partner and I love the outdoor life, gardening and camping.
I started out teaching in an Independent Secondary School in Brighton, teaching the GCSE course, but now I focus on private tuition as I like to be able to give one to one attention to my students.
I have had great success with a wide range of students from younger students looking to pass their school entrance exams to GCSE, A level and IB students looking to get into their first choice of college or university.
I also have many years of experience working online with students using the Learncube teaching platform which I believe is a highly effective online learning tool.
My aim is to create a friendly and encouraging atmosphere for students to learn in. I have learnt over the years that students make the best progress when they feel understood and receive positivity and encouragement.
In the first lesson, I get to know the student, where they are struggling and what their motivation and goals are for Maths. I identify their level and the topics they might need to focus on. From this I form an individual plan for the student and make sure they are on board with it and feel it is relevant and attainable for them.
Over the course of the next few lessons, I get a much clearer picture of the student, how they think and where they get stuck. I can then target these areas with the right mix of support and challenge so that they grow in confidence and ability.
A parent wrote to me recently to say this:
Steve is a fantastic tutor. He has really helped our son with his GCSE maths. Steve not only helped him with the areas he was struggling with, and with exam preparation, he also helped build our son's confidence in maths and encouraged him to believe in himself. Our son enjoyed his sessions with Steve so much, he said he was really going to miss them - something I didn't think i would ever hear him say about maths. Thank you for everything Steve!
I am happy to travel to your home to offer tuition, which often is the most comfortable place for students to work. Please note that I may need to ask for additional travel costs if the journey is more than 5 miles from my home.
