I am a newly qualified teacher and have now completed my first full academic year as an English specialist. I have worked in education for about 3 years. I worked throughout 2020/21 as an English tutor virtually and face to face at a college in Middlesbrough. I completed this academic year at an academy in Gateshead teaching both Keystage 3 and Keystage 4 in both English Language and Literature for AQA specifications.
Before working in education I was an actor for over 20 years performing all over the UK and abroad in plays, musicals and issue based drama. This experience has given me subject specialist knowledge, particularly in English Literature and more specifically, Shakespeare, to approach my lesson delivery and content from the perspective of the actor and how this is conveyed to an audience. How it is made accessible and understandable. If you are struggling with Shakespeare's language, then I am the tutor for you! I have performed Shakespeare professionally for over 20 years, before working in education and can certainly impart this experience into the classroom setting making it more interesting, fun but informative. My approach will make the language much more accessible and promote greater understanding of how to tackle the GCSE questions and their expectations.
I successfully completed my initial teacher training and a full academic year tutoring and teaching KS3 and KS4.
Due to the school closures I upsklled my experience of delivering online lessons through google classroom supporting the year 10 and 11 cohorts in completing their final year assessments. I was involved in faculty standardisation meetings, marking mock GCSE exam papers and the provision and delivery of all my own tutoring sessions for which I won a ‘Star Award’ for my efforts at the school and their successes in providing extra support to the students, ultimately promoting excellent learning outcomes and assessment success.
I would like to think that my previous experience in drama positively influences the way that I deliver my lessons. So that they are fun, fully inclusive, accessible and promote excellent progress and learning. I cater for the needs of all my students supporting them collectively and individually. I am always looking for new resources that can facilitate this. Similarly, I am interested in all new teaching methodologies and if they fit with my style and practice then I am always prepared to implement them into my teaching and lesson delivery.
Before a lesson plan can be put together I would get to know the individual and understand their specific needs first and then plan accordingly to ensure the best outcome. Every session would be specific to that particular student's needs.
