Experienced secondary school teacher with a love for learning.

I went to university in my twenties to get my English degree, became a teacher at 30 and am now gaining university qualifications in maths in my 40s. I struggled at school and it has only been since leaving that I realised my potential is far greater than I thought it was and that I can achieve whatever I want if I put my mind to it.

Supporting young people to overcome the obstacles to their own success in English and maths and achieve what they are capable of is my motivation as a tutor and a teacher as I know first hand the sense of satisfaction you feel when you finally get there.

Tutoring Experience

I have been a secondary school teacher for 15 years, teaching English from S1 - 6, including National 5 and Higher, preparing learners for examination at those levels. I have also been a marker for the SQA for 3 years, marking National 5 RUAE.

I am currently in my second year as a secondary maths teacher, teaching pupils from S1-5, including National 5 Maths and National 5 Applications of Maths.

Tutoring Approach

I generally tutor online using Google Meet. I use Microsoft Whiteboard during lessons and Google Docs which I share with learners as we can both edit the same document easily as if we were writing on the same sheet or exercise book or something similar. I focus my lessons on specific aspects of the subject/course like specific question types in exams or particular skills and abilities that need to be demonstrated. I directly teach and demonstrate these particular aspects, work through some examples together and then give students the opportunity to work independently with myself on hand to provide support when needed, answers to questions and feedback to enable students to grow in confidence and expertise.
