I love being a teacher! To see the young (or older!) people in front of you listen, ask questions, challenge, work hard, come back to you for guidance, grow, gain confidence, then succeed, in exam results or in life is a brilliant experience!
I have taught young people in 11 different schools to GCSE, A Level and Further Maths level. I've also worked in the Bedfordshire Advisory Maths Team, visiting secondary schools and assisting teachers and Heads of Maths and providing resources setting up situations where they can share ideas. I've also worked as a Head of Maths and Acting Deputy Head. You realise that you have to be able to work with people, listen, eliminate barriers to their learning, smile and praise their achievements.
I try to understand where the learner is coming from and work from there. Sometimes a learner can believe that they are weak, mathematically, but their perception is deflected by their lack of confidence, or state of mind. Learning must be fun and I've always tried to make it that way, with true stories from history or from my experiences, relating to the subject, or a catchphrase that can help the memory. Plan properly, go out of your way to find the right explanation and short exercise to assist understanding, be prepared to emphasise it, or send a further email, could be just what was needed.
