I have recently returned to the UK after 20 years working as a senior leader at a prestigious British school in Bahrain. Prior to this, I was a deputy headteacher at a Beacon School in Hampshire.
I'm now looking to employ my skills and experience to support children's learning on a more personal, one-to-one basis. This may be to extend and enrich the learning of more able students, to help prepare students for examinations, or to address areas in which children lack confidence or are underperforming. Some parents may simply want support with their children's weekly homework tasks and to consolidate their learning in school.
In all cases, I will be encouraging children to read!
I have over 25 years experience as a teacher and school leader, with particular expertise in assessment, curriculum development and pastoral care. I specialise in teaching children of all abilities at the upper end of Key Stage 2 (i.e. Year 5 and 6), and have a flair for enthusing children in mathematics. I love the nuances of the written word and am passionate about the imaginative and accurate use of English as a means of expression.
I have a very broad experience of KS2 assessments and the practical aspects of exam preparation. As importantly, I am especially proficient at the on-going 'formative' assessment of students to identify next steps in their learning.
Patient by nature, and with a warm sense of humour, I am quick to form positive relationships with children and their parents. I believe I am particularly effective at motivating learners by developing a shared vision for undertakings and agreeing challenging expectations for their completion. This, allied with my enthusiasm and exceptional subject knowledge, underpins my teaching practice.
Confidence is the key to learning - and so much in life - and I am passionate about fostering a growth mindset in all the children I teach. This enables them to embrace mistakes and to become more reflective and resilient learners. My lessons are meticulously planned, pacy and engaging, and wherever possible will draw on cross-curricular links and a student's real life experiences.
