I have always had a passion for mathematics in the world around me. I studied maths, further maths and physics at A-level, and completed a degree in mathematics and management science in 1983. After thirty challenging and rewarding years in the Metropolitan Police Service I retired as a senior officer in 2013 and decided to fulfil a long-held ambition to retrain as a secondary school maths teacher. I took up my first teaching post in 2014 and quickly joined the leadership team at The King's School, an independent Christian school in Fair Oak, Hampshire. After six happy years at King's I have now 'retired' into self-employment as a private maths tutor.
I am a father to three grown-up, married sons and a contented grandfather to eight little ones. I now live in Kent with my lovely wife, Hazel.
I have been teaching mathematics to GCSE level formally in schools and as an external private tutor since September 2014 but, prior to qualifying as a teacher, I provided one-to-one maths tuition to family, friends and friends of friends on an ad-hoc basis. I am also able to provide support for students considering mathematics at KS5 (A2 and A levels).
During my employment in the police service I headed up various IT projects and led the delivery of training for a new computerised crime reporting system to thousands of police officers and police personnel in London.
I am friendly, patient and approachable and have a great deal of experience of seeing maths at work in the work place. I believe the only way to LEARN mathematics is to DO mathematics, but this means much more than just repetitive practice. I want my students to understand how to apply maths in the real world, and to use their understanding of the world to make sense of the maths taught in schools today. Every student is unique, so I work hard to design a programme of study that meets an individual's needs. I also believe praise and encouragement are great tools for building confidence. Please note, I now only provide tuition online. :)
