Hello! My name is Tom. I have taught Secondary English for five years and am currently employed at a high-performing grammar school in Kent. Prior to becoming a Secondary English teacher, I lectured in the School of English at the University of Kent for nearly a decade.
I hold advanced degrees in English literature (BA, MA, PhD) and this expert subject knowledge forms the cornerstone of my teaching practice.
Studying literature has enriched my life in so many ways and I take pride in helping to access and understand the subject. Whether your aim is to achieve a Grade 4/5 in English at GCSE or excel at A Level, I can help. Please contact me for my current availability; I am available to tutor most weekday evenings and during the weekends.
I am a fully-qualified, experienced teacher of Secondary English. I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in English (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in 2020. During my training year, I was fortunate enough to gain experience of teaching in selective and non-selective schools.
Over the last five years, I have taught English at every key stage (KS3, KS4 and KS5) in both non-selective and grammar schools with excellent results. I have taught three of the most popular GCSE exam boards (AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR) for English Literature and Language, and served as a GCSE examiner for OCR in 2024.
I am currently a Teacher of English at a local high-performing grammar school and continue to teach English Literature on the University of Kent's Access to Higher Education programme.
My approach to tutoring is rooted in personalised learning. I believe that every student learns in their own unique way and at their own pace, which is why I tailor my lessons to suit your child's individual strengths, needs, and goals.
I begin by assessing their current level of understanding and skill and, from there, I design lessons that will help them to gain confidence, improve and make progress.
As exams approach, I focus on exam techniques and strategies, customised to the specific exam boards and formats your child will encounter. This includes providing insight into exam structures, time management strategies, and focused revision plans. We will also work through past papers to ensure they are thoroughly prepared and confident when sitting their exams.
As a tutor, I strive to maintain open communication with both you and your child, offering regular feedback on their progress and adjusting my approach as necessary.
