I graduated from Durham university with an MPhys and enjoy all things related to maths, physics and astronomy. I completed a PhD at the School of Electronic engineering at Bangor university. Subsequently, I have worked at Bangor university and Newcastle university as a researcher. I am a keen hill walker, astronomer and enjoy playing the piano and organ. Currently I am training to be a teacher of Mathematics at York university.
I have a broad experience of working with young people having been a qualified leader in the Bangor scout group for a number of years whilst I was at school. I then was subsequently a warranted adult leader I am familiar with all national curriculum requirements and the details of each specification in maths and physics.
During my PhD, I was a tutor for GCSE and A level maths and physics and I received positive feedback from students and parents regarding my approach and support. I helped several students achieve their goals in Maths and Physics learning. Whilst at Bangor university I also had several opportunities to support teaching as a demonstrator in undergraduate workshop sessions where I would aid and support students in tackling problems in their study through set tasks and questions.
I am currently pursuing a PGCE in maths teaching at secondary school level through York university.
My tutoring approach will concentrate on key concepts and linking these with everyday contexts so that the student is aware of the relevance of what they are learning. I will encourage students to target areas of difficulty by asking key questions. This will instil in the student confidence in their learning. I wish to make the tutorials a relaxed and productive experienced for the student so that they feel comfortable in asking questions.
