Hi, I’m Umar – a dedicated and approachable tutor, and an Engineering offer holder at Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge. I’ve just completed my A-Levels at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford with top predicted grades: A*s in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Electronics, and EPQ, ranking 1st in my year for Physics and Electronics as well as 3rd for Further Maths. At GCSE, I have achieved twelve Grade 9s including Maths and English.
My aptitude for STEM, especially engineering, has been recognised nationally. I’m a two-time Gold CREST Award winner for engineering innovation projects, a Silver CREST recipient for electronics design, and a finalist in the PA Raspberry Pi Competition. I led my school’s Student Robotics team to the national quarterfinals and received awards from the Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society (CSES TEXPO). I've also received a Gold Award for the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge and the BPhO Physics Olympiad (R1).
As an A-Level graduate from King Edward VI Grammar School and a Cambridge Engineering offer holder, I bring strong academic grounding and teaching experience. I’ve mentored students through the Young Engineers Club, delivered a Royal Institution masterclass on Graph Theory to Year 6 pupils, and led Physics Society sessions on advanced topics. I’ve also supported GCSE peers with one-to-one tutoring and created revision materials used across my year group in 12 GCSE subjects, A-Level Physics, and Electronics.
As a recent student who has taken all the qualifications I offer support in, my teaching approach is grounded in first-hand experience of the exam content, common pitfalls, and effective learning strategies. I understand the pressures students face and aim to be both relatable and approachable — whether a student is struggling or seeking to push beyond the syllabus. I've researched evidence-based learning methods and structure my lessons around active recall, frequent use of past paper questions, targeted flashcards, and spaced repetition. I adapt to each student’s pace and learning style, ensuring every session is productive and focused.
