Enthusiastic biologist and general scientist who loves exploring the wonders of science with young people. Understanding science is important as it touches so many areas of our lives. I am a stickler for detail and “good science” which helps students maximise their potential in examinations…
I have 35 years of teaching experience - teaching at all levels. Even as a senior leader, I continued to teach both GCSE and A level as well as assist students with oxbridge/veterinary/ UCAS applications. From some of the best students in the land to those who simply want to get through their GCSE, I have tried and tested techniques to make the subject engaging and accessible.
I make sure first principles are absolutely sound - for on these, all science is built. Then I build the detail, bit by bit, checking understanding and testing through quizzes and past paper questions (where appropriate). I always insist on proper terminology and concise answers so the student is constantly practising a scientific approach. I couple this with making sure students can apply their knowledge and understand the wider implications of the ideas they are studying; this leads to greater engagement if they can see a “real life” use for the concepts. Finally, as with everything, an enthusiastic and encouraging approach is essential! I have endless patience, am relentlessly optimistic and have an excellent sense of humour!!
