My name is Will and I am deeply passionate about languages. I love both learning them myself and helping others to feel more confident in using them, be it in an academic context or simply for personal pleasure. I have studied them at the University of Birmingham (BA) and Magdalene College, Cambridge (MPhil, PGCE). In the former, I was fortunate enough to win two academic prizes in my undergraduate degree for coursework and exam results in Spanish and Japanese.
I have been teaching a mixture of Spanish, French and Japanese since 2022, first as a trainee secondary teacher in schools across Birmingham and Cambridge before taking up a post in the Grey Coat Hospital in Westminster, London. I left this position when the opportunity to read for an MPhil in French at Cambridge presented itself. Since January this year, I have been transferring these skills to a career as a private tutor with a rapidly growing number of students.
I prefer an extremely practical approach to teaching, involving extensive reading aloud of texts to practise pronunciation, discussing their meaning, and reviewing grammar as it comes up rather than only focusing on it in isolation. As part of this ethos, I believe scaffolding is important, so that students always feel supported in the learning process and thus make faster progress.
