Maths and Mandarin Lessons in Islington

I am a mathematics teacher from China, currently in my seventh year of teaching. I graduated from one of China's top normal universities, majoring in mathematics, a subject I am deeply passionate about. I have my own understanding of educational methods. Currently, I am pursuing a Master's in Mathematics Education at UCL and preparing for my PhD application, aspiring to become an expert in mathematics education.

Tutoring Experience

In 2016, I primarily engaged in one-on-one tutoring (covering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English) and small group teaching (Mathematics and Physics for high school students), along with extensive work in textbook editing and problem analysis. From 2017 to 2020, I joined Xueersi, China's largest extracurricular tutoring organization, and worked at its Haidian Huangzhuang branch in Beijing, a popular choice among the city's top students. My role focused on math competition coaching for upper primary and middle school students, leveraging my own experience in math contests to excel as a coach. These courses were conducted in small offline classes (10-20 students). Between 2019 and 2020, I also taught in public schools, focusing on middle and high school math competitions, and began online teaching, typically for two to three schools simultaneously (with about 50-100 students per class). From 2020 to 2022, I joined Yuanfudao, another leading online education company in China, as the head of the middle school math competition team, responsible for developing the entire product. In 2023, as I prepared for my studies abroad, I scaled back most of my teaching duties but continued to teach middle and high school students at Zhixin Education. However, I have limited experience in teaching in English. I once taught a Canadian student whose parents helped translate parts he didn't understand. While my English expression may be limited, I am a quick learner. I suggest letting the child experience a session with me to see if we can communicate effectively before deciding to proceed with classes.

Tutoring Approach

For high-achieving students: I focus on expansion, enriching their knowledge based on their needs, without limiting their development, to help them achieve excellent results in various competitions.
For average students: Practice-oriented, I identify and target their weak areas with specific exercises, aiming to boost their performance while fostering good habits and interest in mathematics.
For students struggling with the subject: Encouragement is key. I start by cultivating good study habits, then focus on improving grades through numerous examples to grasp abstract concepts, thereby further igniting their interest in learning and creating a positive learning cycle.
