⁘Aims and Vision⁘
Share my passion for Natural Sciences and help you find the beauty of science.
Help you gain thorough understanding of the subject, its interconnection with other subjects and how they intermingle to give a systematic understanding of Nature.
Help you develop an efficient and productive way of learning.
Foster a spirit of enquiry and critical thinking.
Emphasise the interdisciplinarity of the science world and highlight the real-world applications of what you are learning.
Bring Cutting-edge Research findings into lessons to build a holistic view of the subject.

The Dream results, whether they are exams or university applications, arrive naturally by having the aims above at heart.

The study of chemical process in living systems interest me the most and my favourite research area is the genetic basis of how cancer occurs. Having been President of my school's Science Society and Committee Member of Biomedical Society, I have extensive experience in communications with leading researchers and operations of student-led research projects.

Through tutoring I hope to help more students to see the beauty of science- maybe even love it! The happiest 2 things for me in tutoring are firstly being able to bring the maximal potential out of my students and secondly to see them deciding to pursue a STEM subject further at university.

Tutoring Experience

University Application

Biology, Chemistry

Build the general skeleton of the discipline in students with emphasis on re-occurring themes that appear in different areas of the subejct.
Develop the mindset of an interdisciplinary talent of 21st Century, engaging with biological/chemcial systems from first person point of view.
Solidify the provenance (evidence of why the way is it, how it was discovered) and mechanism (what is it, how it works, why it works) of the concepts; appreciate the controversy (potential pitfalls of current school of thinking) and applications (its relevance to daily life) of the theories. This leads to critical thinking of biology/chemistry.
Emphasise the importance of a quantitative understanding of the subject.
Thorough understanding of learning points in Exam Board syllabus is the foundation. Recent research findings, academic lectures relevant to the topics under study are also core.
Provide Detailed analysis of exam questions & mark schemes to train you to write less while scoring all the marks.
Practise designing experiments and enhance experimental techniques.

Mathematics/Further Mathematics

Build the general skeleton of the discipline in students with emphasis on re-occurring themes that appear in different areas of the subject.
Develop the mindset of a modern mathematician and introduce the use of computer technology to assist analysis.
Solidify the mechanism and principle (what is it, how it works, why it works) of mathematical concepts; appreciate the elegance of having multiple solutions to a problem and the theories’ relevance to daily life.
Improve the ability to combine appropriate methods and theories learned to solve unseen questions.
Thorough understanding of learning points in Exam Board syllabus is the foundation. Reading and practice of external resources are also core.
Provide Detailed analysis of exam questions & mark schemes to highlight places where mistakes happen easily and to summarise different types of questions might be asked.

Tutoring Approach

Bespoke Teaching Plan

Free consultation meeting is held before first lesson to gain sufficient understanding of your purpose in having tutoring and your current performance. It is also your opportunity to know more about my teaching style, administrative tasks and my expectations.

A detailed scheme of work is created for each student for a mutually agreed period. Progress is assessed via exam styled tests and reviewed with parents/guardians periodically.
The tailored program suits your requirement- whether it is long-term consolidation lessons in synchronise with school classes or “sprinting” sessions before exams/interviews.

Teaching Style

I develop students into active thinkers by asking questions about a concept from various angles. I stay up to date to trends in syllabus updates. I have experienced what you are experiencing so I can offer advice and tips that match your situation.

A typical theory lesson is as follows. From the scheme of work you will know what the next lesson is about. In your time find out about the topic either through school classes for textbook. At the beginning of lessons you will give 5 minutes talk about your current understanding of the topic. I will give a detailed presentation. This is then followed by answering questions students often get wrong. At other times we might explore an experiment together or use software for analysis. Or we may read a scientific paper and answer my questions.

Lesson Format

Online Conference Platforms are making online lessons even more productive. It connects tutors to distant students who need help. I employ Skype or Google Meet or Zoom for the delivery of lessons, depending on the student’s preference. I use Miro or software default Whiteboard for live exchange of ideas.
A scheme of work is created and shared beforehand for a mutually agreed period. Teaching objectives follow such scheme. The lessons comprise of interactive lectures, analysis of question styles, exploration of tools & software, series of stimulating questions, experimental models and many more.

Expectations

I hope to help you improve independent learning skills. I can help you improve time management.
I hope to help you enjoy the subject and not work just for exams. Having a crystal-clear understanding allows fantastic results to come naturally. I will work on exam techniques with you thereafter.
Homework is set. The difficulty is set a bit harder than your current ability. Homework is scanned and marked before next lesson where key issues are addressed.
For university prep class students, deadlines must be met promptly.
For A-level students and beyond, I expect time is invested outside of the lessons for wider reading.
