I am a MSc graduate in Applied Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) with a special interest in educational psychology. My personal motivation to develop further insight into the role of factors involving thought processes and biopsychosocial factors on an individual's behaviour has intrigued me to study Psychology throughout my GCSEs, A Levels, as well as studying the subject at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate level.
Through my academic experience, I have developed an interest in pursing an educational role, more specifically as a tutor, providing ongoing and continued support to pupils.
As part of my role as a mentor at Barry Bennett, I weekly organise 1:1 sessions with university students regarding how they are currently coping academically, socially and emotionally. Here I provide support on coping mechanisms with a focus on their wellbeing and mental health. Through this role I have developing an understanding of the importance of maintaining mental health as a student. This has equipped me with key knowledge on how to support students following a multifaceted approach. Many students have provided positive feedback regarding the structure and timing of the sessions. Others have benefitted strongly from meditation and other relaxation techniques as guided within these sessions. The skills I have acquired as a mentor can be easily transferrable to a role as a tutor and I aim to follow a similar approach.
I have previously organised and facilitated study sessions with first-year university students as a PASS Leader, delivering peer support and maintaining a good rapport with people through interacting and listening to any issues they may have in their personal and/or academic lives. My role as a PASS Leader provided me with the confidence to effectively support people with any hardships or worries encountered academically or personally. Such experiences have taught me the effectiveness of empowering and influencing individuals to improve their overall wellbeing.
I start from topics the students are comfortable with and gradually transition towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I continually utilise questions and examples to check understanding. I don't lecture to students or ask them to memorise things. Nor do I do the students' homework for them!
