I am a 4th year Computing BSc student at the University of Kent (having completed a Year in Industry last year) and have had a strong interest in Maths since a young age. I have a determined attitude towards getting problems solved whether it be a simple solution or a more complex methodology. I love teaching in general and find it a privilege that I can pass on my knowledge to students who need it to improve their grades and reach their goals. My hobbies include swimming, chess and violin (Grade 4) and have a keen interest in technology.
Having already completed SATS (Level 6 in English, Mathematics and Science) in primary school, 11 GCSES, 3 A-Levels with 1 AS-Level and 2 years of university, I have the necessary revision and exam experience to provide excellent tutoring for you, whatever level you are currently at. This includes:
Achieved a 1st in my first year of studying BSc Computing – including 88% in the Mathematics module, and a 2:1 in my second year (now doing a year-in-industry placement at a company in London)
A - A-Level Edexcel Mathematics (A in the Core modules)
A* - GCSE Edexcel Mathematics
A - GCSE AQA English Language
A - GCSE AQA English Literature
3 A’s- GCSE for all three core sciences (AQA) – Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Got into Tiffin Boys Grammar School via passing the notoriously difficult Verbal and Non-Verbal exams, where only 150 students out of over 2000 applicants got in.
Completed all the Kumon levels and have ranked 3rd on the regional leaderboard previously.
Level 6 for English, Maths and Science at SATS primary school level.
Beyond my knowledge in these subjects, I believe the key to tutoring is to actually enjoy teaching (which I definitely do!), provide an enjoyable atmosphere for the student to learn in and catering each session to suit the progress of the student. This helps you, the student, to get the most out of each session so you come away feeling as if you have made a step in the right direction every time.
I have been tutoring privately for a year now, tutoring over 10 students in this time. I know how to tutor and what techniques are required to get the most out of it. I also already have invaluable experience tutoring having worked as a tutor in Kumon and completed sessions for friends, family and colleagues; creating teaching material for every session. This has been in a variety of subjects including Mathematics, English Language/Literature and Computer Science (Web programming and other programming languages, as well as general IT).
A rewarding aspect of this has been helping many people at university who struggled with Maths as they didn’t take it as an A-Level, so I often spent time after class to teach them topics that they struggled on to give them the best chance of passing the module. I have a wealth of experience in teaching Mathematics and English in particular from when I worked at Kumon, where I taught these two subjects from the lowest levels all the way to the highest levels. This included teaching individuals and groups of all different ages, which highlights my willingness to cater for all different levels.
I have been working online since the COVID-19 pandemic started, and have all the necessary tools needed to make it an enjoyable and seamless experience which is just like being in person.
By testing each individual topic of the syllabus, I can help reinforce what you have learnt and give some positive feedback on where improvement is needed. Regular assessment and me providing you essential exam tips is what gets you exam-ready and prevent you getting caught out on common pitfalls such as running out of time, misreading the question or missing out on easy, “obvious marks”.
I aim to teach you in a style that helps me understand what pace we need to go at, what material we need to cover and when to periodically test your knowledge on each topic. To achieve this, in our first session I would typically identify what subjects you require to be tutored on, what curriculum you are on, what (or if not) exam board you are on and what level you are currently at. We can have a look at your strengths and weaknesses to determine what we really need to focus on first to stamp out any bad habits/mistakes. Once this is established I can prepare a plan with you so we are both comfortable with the material that each session will be covering. This will provide an organised structure to each lesson, ensuring no time is wasted.
Following on from this intro, we would then proceed with the first topic in this session, which will most definitely leave you feeling more positive and confident about the subject already! To reinforce each lesson, I will set homework on what we learnt and go through it at the start of the next session.
For further sessions, I will continue to prepare material each week to go through with you so you can understand each section thoroughly. From my experience, you can only do so much of just memorising and regurgitating information; there needs to be a clear understanding of what you are learning in order to tackle the more difficult questions in the examination.
