I am a qualified and practising science teacher. My current role is Director of Science at a school in Chislehurst. I have a firm awareness of the current requirements to get a good grade in your exams, whether they be gcse or a level. In addition, my science background comes hand in hand with a firm mathematical understanding. As well as teaching the conventional routes, I am experienced with the ocr national and btec pathways and so would be able to provide assignment based tutition to ocr and btec candidates.
I have been working in schools for ten years now. The first of which, I was working as a science technician and providing tuition for the gcse candidates. Following completion of my teacher training and NQT year I undertook the role of KS3 coordinator within a secondary school in Guildford. A year later I was promoted to Head of Year 9 and stayed with my year group until the end of Year 10. I was then appointed as lead practitioner for science within an outstanding in all categories school in central London. In September 2017 I returned to Surrey and undertook a dual role Head of Science and lead practitioner for Science education across Guildford. Essentially this meant as well as teaching students in the school in which I was predominantly based I also worked to improve teaching and learning in science across Surrey.
In order for pupils to achieve it is important that they have an understanding of concepts coverred. Once they have a firm grasp of concepts they are more likely to remeber them when it comes to the exam. No pupil will achieve this understanding through being talked at by someone. I therefore try to ensure that my lessons combine teaching, discussion and activities that reinforce understanding and cater for the learning style of the pupil.
