I'm a half-English half-French Oxford Classics graduate, who is passionate about learning and making learning enjoyable. A few years ago I decided to leave the world of financial services policy to focus on tutoring full-time, alongside writing fiction. It is a real joy to nurture my students' talents and watch as their confidence and abilities grow.
With a strong academic record myself (scholarship to Lady Eleanor Holles School, 10 A* at GCSE, A*A*A*A at A-Level) I understand how to prepare for exams and am familiar with the best methods for getting results.
That said, I take a unique approach, where the focus is on meeting the student where they are at: in confidence, learning style, interests. Whether that means creating a Latin prose composition based on WW2, or using celebrity popularity rankings to create line graphs, I don't take a 'one-size-fits-all' approach.
Student's subsequent academic success is testament to this: from being silent in class to a top contributor, getting into the schools they wanted to go to, receiving awards at school for their improvement.
I currently children from ages 6-16, primarily in Maths and English, but also including Latin, Greek and Science. I am familiar with the national curriculum and examinations from Primary to GCSE (including 7-11+). I am particularly interested in tutoring more Latin and Greek.
-2011-2012, Latin teacher for primary school students
-2018-2019 Volunteer French Tutor for GCSE students
-2021-ongoing, English, Maths and Classics Tutor for Primary-GCSE students
I believe in adapting to fit the needs and learning methods of each student, while using structured lesson plans to provide consistency (e. g ten minute recap, longer set piece, ten minute consolidation exercise).
I build a supportive relationship with each student, whether aged 5 or 16, so that we can tackle difficulties together in a fun and safe way. I creatively use a variety of materials: textbooks, exam papers, my own resources, online videos.
For me, learning isn't about doing what you're told, it's about your mind developing in playful and challenging ways.
