Matthew

I am a teacher, pianist and composer currently working in Cardiff. I have a doctorate in Music Composition. With a wide range of experience both performing and composing, I have had my pieces performed in Cardiff, London, Switzerland, and Cyprus. I have personally performed in venues including The Royal Festival Hall, London.

My specialisms include composition, piano performance and technique, and musical theory and analysis.

Tutoring Experience

With over 10 years teaching experience, I have picked up knowledge about music and teaching from a wide range of students, from ages 4 to 80, and with a wide range of abilities, from beginners to advanced, and students with learning difficulties.

I have taught Music and Composition at Cardiff University and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I have aided students with composition, performance, and examination skills for GCSE and A-Level coursework and exams.

I also hold a Masters in Music Composition and a PhD in Music Composition.

I currently hold a 100% pass exam rate for pupils, with about an 80% merit and distinction rate.

Tutoring Approach

Lessons are planned specifically for each students individual needs and abilities, with a focus on keeping work interesting and diverse. I also give full feedback notes in each lesson so that a student and their parents know exactly what is required for preparation for the next lesson, and ensure that everyone is aware of the student's development.

I believe in an all-round musical education, not simply designed just to teach students how to pass exams, but how to help them develop into well-rounded musicians, with a broad and fully understanding knowledge of the music they make.
